Treat Projects Like a Venture

The most important aspect of any project is that benefit (money!) is brought to the business investing in its development. While every project starts with a cost/benefit statement most projects then continue to control cost very tightly but with little management of the benefits. Accountability for the benefits is often undefined and therefore forgotten about.

A Venture approach means the focus becomes the repaying of the investment (via benefits) and an accountability statement being produced specifying who will manage those benefits. Adopting this approach to an organisation needs to be planned but the result should encourage entrepreneurial thought and improve the cost/benefit calculation of many projects. Read more >>
 

Program Offices - The Cure for all Ills?

Program Offices (PMO), managing all the projects throughout a company, have become de rigueur for all major companies over the last few years. Software and processes abound to support the PMO and job vacancies for PMO Managers are commonplace.

In spite of this, many PMOs are not delivering the benefits that many expected the investment would bring and too many companies show signs of stress between their development teams and the PMO. In implementing a PMO, companies have to think carefully where it fits within the existing, or revised management structure and clearly communicate the business aims of establishing a PMO.
